Orientation Awaits: A Chaplaincy Welcome
Good afternoon,
Higher and A Level results are out, and many people are now sure they are coming to St Andrews to begin their University education. It’s time for them to start packing clothes, books, trombones and cacti, and to work out how to get here, to the ends of the earth, round about 6 September. Many more are planning their return for a further year, looking forward to catching up with friends, and re-engaging with the East Sands, the Lade Braes, academic families and fudge doughnuts.
We in the Chaplaincy are also wondering just where the summer went as we plan services, discussion groups, interfaith events and ongoing care for students and staff. We are getting ready for Orientation Week – Freshers Fayre and postgraduate welcomes, walking tour and Faith Fayre, Opening Ceremonies and Pier Walks. More details soon – but the first Sunday service will be on 7 September. I’ll be speaking on “Look out! The slope is steep and the road is slippery!”
One thing we do know is that we have said farewell to some wonderful volunteers over the summer – our Chief Usher Lia, and other ushers and members of the tech team. Would you be interested in giving some time to help students, staff and others enjoy their Chapel experience? Ushers come in time to prepare the chapel, greet worshippers, and help people feel welcome. Tech volunteers learn how to ensure there is good audio in the chapel and a great experience for those taking part via the livestream. Could you help – undergraduate, postgraduate, or regular chapel-goer? It doesn’t need to be a weekly commitment – people help when they can.
We have our new Chaplaincy booklet! Featuring the restored Pier Walk on the cover, it’s available at chapel services, or from the office, and is full of information about the Chaplaincy team, visiting preachers, discussion groups, faith societies and religious festivals throughout the year.
Congratulations if you have recently handed in your Masters thesis, and have a wonderful onward journey. And if you are a student returning to St Andrews, all the best with your preparations. Chaplains are here now and around before (and after) the semester starts for anything you’d like to talk about, in confidence.

Write to me or the Chaplaincy office on [email protected] if you’d like to help with ushering or tech this coming year.
Yours,
Donald
