‘Musical magic’

Greetings,

Today’s Companionship focusses on a wonderful piece of music which members of St Salvator’s Chapel Choir sang during this morning’s service.  Guided by the Director of Chapel Music, Claire Innes-Hopkins, they recorded themselves (video and audio) singing their part of the anthem, which were then sewn together by Claire, and shared as the anthem during today’s service.  The music is beautiful, joyous and a feat not only of talent and application, but technological mastery.

The anthem is by Thomas Weelkes, (1576 –1623) who was an English composer and organist.  He became organist of Winchester College in 1598, moving to Chichester Cathedral. His works are chiefly vocal, and include madrigals, anthems and services.  The anthem sung today reflects the crowds’ words to Jesus as he entered Jerusalem on a donkey:

Hosanna to the Son of David,
Blessed be the King that cometh
In the name of the Lord, Hosanna.
Thou that sittest in the highest heav’ns,
Hosana in excelsis Deo.

We have now entered Holy Week, leading to Good Friday and beyond.  Nightly Chaplaincy services will begin tomorrow, Monday 6 April, and will happen at 9 pm each night.  (Note this confirmed time.)  From Monday to Wednesday they will take the form of a service of Compline, then on Thursday and Friday they will take slightly different form.  There will be members of different choirs participating each evening, and different chaplains giving brief addresses on a common theme – the Five Senses, as found in the narrative of Jesus’ time in Jerusalem leading up to his death.  Tomorrow the address will be given by the Assistant Chaplain, Revd Sam Ferguson, on the sense of smell.  I will hope to share the printed order on to your screen, but I have attached it here for those who would prefer to have it in advance.

Here is the invitation to tomorrow’s service.  Note that Zoom is now including a password for these events, which is included below.
