‘Lockdown paintings’

Greetings,

We reach another Sunday, another new week in the time of the virus and our constrained lives. The weather has turned here in Fife after weeks of calm, dry and sunny weather. It’s colder and windier today, and I heard a moment ago that it has been snowing in Aberdeen. It’s hard to believe that I swam yesterday under sunny skies in the saltwater pool at Castle Sands. Today is a time perhaps for staying in, staying warm, opening that book or watching that long film.

Here are two paintings by Tim Cockburn to set the mood. Tim lives in Pittenweem, and his work as a painter and printmaker is known to many who go to the Pittenweem Arts Festival. This first painting is called The new Friday evening, and I suspect depicts a typical Friday evening these days (and Saturday to Thursday evenings) in many households across the world.

When Tim’s partner Ailsa shared these pictures with me, she said that on top of everything else, there was a power cut one evening in Pittenweem, which led to this second scene:

I hope you won’t need a miner’s lamp to help in reading today. And thank you Tim for being willing to share these lockdown paintings with others.

At today’s service from the Chaplaincy we heard and saw St Salvator’s Chapel Choir sing another marvellous recording from multiple homes, Surrexit Pastor Bonus by the 16th Century composer Orlande de Lassus. Congratulations to Claire and members of the choir for this lovely anthem.

Here is the link to it: https://www.facebook.com/UniversityofStAndrewsMusicCentre/videos/563628404289290/

Surrexit pastor bonus
qui animam suam posuit pro ovibus
suis,
et pro grege suo mori dignatus est, alleluia

The good shepherd has arisen,
who laid down his life for his sheep,
and for his flock deigned to die, alleluia

With all good wishes for the new week, especially if you are embarking on exams. Remember that the Chaplaincy team, including Sam or me, are just a quick email away if you’d like a chat.

Yours,

Donald.
