Sunday Worship – 13 September

Just a quick email in advance of tomorrow’s Chaplaincy newsletter to let you know that you are welcome to reserve a place at this Sunday’s Chapel Service at 11 am, the Opening Service of the Martinmas Semester.  I will be the preacher and the sermon is entitled The Lovely Virtue.  As last week, we will have many elements which are familiar – prayers, readings, organ music, the beauty of the chapel – and some unfamiliar things – spoken hymns, candles of hope and the wearing of face-coverings.  Here is the link to the University’s Events page.

https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/sunday-worship-42/  At the time of writing, 11 spaces are available.

The service will explore the theme of courage which the children of Israel showed in crossing the Red Sea, and which has seemed so central to our experience this year.  Here is a very early depiction of the crossing from a synagogue in present-day Syria:

It’s been an Orientation Week busy with online events – allowing new and returning students to meet faith society representatives and chaplains, filming a walking tour of the places of worship in the town, and meeting new taught postgraduates.  I’ve also now conducted Morning Prayers online three times.  I’m settling down to the rhythm of this.  I miss being in St Salvator’s Chapel first thing, but it’s been good to come together as a community in this contemporary way.  Every day it’s the same link: Join Microsoft Teams Meeting  Monday to Friday, 8.45 am for ten minutes.

That’s all for now.  Look out for much more news in tomorrow’s newsletter.

Yours,
Donald.
