‘Reservation links’

Good evening,

as Orientation Week draws to a close.

A reminder that tomorrow sees the Opening Service of the Martinmas Semester in St Salvator’s Chapel at 11 am. All the reserved spaces have gone I’m afraid. I remember many years ago when studying for the ministry we had a discussion in class as to whether more people would attend church services if they had to pay for a ticket. We all deplored the idea, little knowing that in 2020 people would indeed have to reserve a space at worship. But at least there is no charge! If you have reserved a place but now cannot come, please let me know – we could then offer your place to someone else.

If you would like to take part in worship tomorrow but haven’t reserved a space, there will be an online service at 2 pm. There will be music, hymn-singing in the comfort of your own home, the Principal and Chief Usher will read, and I will give the sermon, on The Lovely Virtue. Sam, the Assistant Chaplain, will also be involved in leading prayer. If you haven’t attended anything online via Microsoft Teams, it seems to work better if you download it in advance. Here is a taster of what the lovely virtue may be:

For much of the afternoon tomorrow, members of the Chaplaincy team will be in our online booth in the Freshers Fayre. To attend the online fayre and come and see us at our stall between 12 noon and 5 pm, see https://www.yourunion.net/virtualfayres/ and register.

Next Sunday the Chapel service will again have a maximum of 50 people. Sam will preach on Agents of Grace. You’ll be able to reserve a place at that service from Monday on the University’s Events page: https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/

People have already started reserving places at the first service of Compline, this coming Thursday 17 September, at 10 pm in St Salvator’s Chapel. https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/compline-20/
There are still 43 out of 50 spaces remaining, so it may not fill up completely. We hope to have a chorister singing in that service.

I hope you don’t mind this extra email with information. Things are changing so fast, and we all have to make reservations for things we used to just turn up for. I look forward to seeing some of the Chaplaincy’s companions in person or online tomorrow.

Yours,

Donald.
