‘A promise of love’

Greetings,

It’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow, when lovers, chocolate-makers, card companies, florists and wine-producers unite in celebrating love.  Although Valentine is a saint, it’s hardly a central festival in the Christian calendar.  Indeed, it doesn’t feel particularly festive to people who don’t have an obvious recipient in mind for any tokens of affection.  Nevertheless, in the midst of the long-running instruction to Stay at Home, alongside bitter February winds, perhaps a message of love may warm us a little.

And to mark the occasion, a few photos of couples who promised their love to each other in weddings I’ve conducted as Chaplain.

Christopher and Hannah, September 2019

Maneesh and Nayantara, November 2019

Lucy and Scott, December 2020

Tomorrow’s Chapel service (14 February) will be livestreamed from St Salvator’s Chapel with live music from singers and organist, a sermon from Dr Mary Cullen, editor of Catholic journal Open House, on the transfiguration of Jesus, and a Valentine’s-themed addition to the Tree of Hope.

With all good wishes for St Valentine’s Day tomorrow.

Yours,

Donald.

Revd Dr Donald MacEwan

Chaplain
