Message for Lent

Linda Bongiorno
Wednesday 2 March 2022

Good morning…

…on Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, the season in the Christian year which leads to Good Friday and Easter.  This is just a brief message to wish you a meaningful Lent, whether you are giving something up, committing to something more, or just trying to make it from day to day.

In this afternoon’s service of Evensong in St Salvator’s Chapel at 5.30 pm, the Chapel Choir will sing beautiful music by Byrd for the beginning of Lent.  There will also be the opportunity for all to receive ashes upon our foreheads, as a sign of penitence and we begin this journey with Jesus, who suffered with his people and for them.  All are welcome, regardless of faith or philosophy of life.

Many have reflected on connections between the war in Ukraine and this beginning of Lent.  And indeed we heard a Ukrainian setting of the Kyrie – Lord, have mercy – throughout the vigil.  May this Lent be a time of solidarity, of recognition of where humanity takes the wrong path, and of community in suffering and hope.

Yours,

Donald.
