Chaplaincy Prize Winners

Good afternoon,

I’m writing with news of a mass rally for peace in Ukraine taking place in St Andrews next Wednesday 30 March.  This is a response to President Zelensky’s call on people to come from their offices, homes, schools and universities, in the name of peace, to support freedom and life, making ourselves visible and heard.  Called St Andrews stands with Ukraine, it will begin at 5.15 pm at Lower College Lawn with a gathering, at which I will speak, followed by a march to West Sands at which we’ll form a single human line, as long as possible, as a visible display of opposition to the war and the aggression of the Russian government.  All are welcome – students, staff, local residents and others.  Further details can be found here: https://events.st-andrews.ac.uk/events/st-andrews-stands-with-ukraine/

In a different way, the Chaplaincy supported freedom and life last week, in the name of peace, by hosting a Prize-giving event for this year’s Chaplaincy Prize on the theme of friendship.  We saw and heard some brilliant entries including the winning video by Kate Millar (which you can see here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvAsLvWanVs) and a number of highly commended contributions.  Here is a photo of the winner (fifth from left) and others who spoke at the event, alongside two other judges and me:

And while I’m writing, a reminder that tomorrow morning’s chapel service will be at 11 am British Summer Time.  Today’s sunshine is perhaps a good clue that the hour is changing tonight, moving forward an hour.  Spring forward, fall back.  The preacher is Rt Revd Peter Eagles, Bishop of Sodor and Man – essentially the Bishop for the Isle of Man.  He’s speaking on The Prodigal Son and the God who welcomes us home.  St Salvator’s Chapel Choir will be singing a beautiful setting of Set me as a seal upon thine heart by William Walton, and the Sanctus and Benedictus from Frank Martin’s Mass for Double Choir.  Indeed they’ll be singing the whole mass in a concert with the Gesualdo Six on Friday 8 April at 7.30 pm in the Laidlaw Music Centre – tickets are now on sale from the Byre Box Office, 01334 475000 and https://byretheatre.com/shows/st-andrews-concert-series-and-voices-present-st-salvators-chapel-choir-and-the-gesualdo-six/

Finally, a happy Mothers’ Day tomorrow to all mothers and others who are celebrating, and with wishes for peace for all mothers in and from Ukraine.

Yours,
Donald.
