St Monan’s Day – 1 March 2023

Good morning…

…on St Monan’s Day.  It is believed that St Monan was a hermit monk who lived near where the Inverie burn (stream) meets the sea in the East Neuk of Fife, where there is now a village which bears his name.  He apparently lived on partans (crabs) and black bread (an early baked loaf).  People would come to him for cures and wisdom.  Legend has it that he was put to death by Vikings on 1 March, 874 AD.

I was minister of St Monans Church of Scotland for ten years from 2001 until joining the University as Chaplain in 2011.  I loved leading worship in the wonderful 14th Century kirk right beside where the burn meets the sea.  Indeed I was last there to lead a service on Christmas Day a couple of months ago, when I took this photo.

Happy St Monan’s Day (and St David’s Day for Welsh readers)!

Yours,

Donald.
