Advent: 5 December

Tuesday 5 December 2023

Good morning,

Some of the photographs catalogued this summer by our Chaplaincy intern Natasha are pictures I’ve taken of works of art in museums, galleries, churches and elsewhere.  My snapshots are usually not as good as images of the works found on the internet, but they are a record of art which has struck me in my travels as particularly beautiful or significant.

Today’s image and haiku explore the story of John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus often told during Advent.  The haiku touches on his birth and beyond.  The image is of a painted and gilded piece of limewood depicting John baptizing Jesus in the River Jordan.  It’s from the workshop of Veit Stoss in Nuremberg, Germany, from 1480-90, and I saw it at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Expectation past,
a child for Elizabeth,
turning lives around

Yours,
Donald.
