Behind today’s window in Ding-dong merrily on haiku is a further reflection on the shepherds. The image is from the Museu Nacional do Azulejo (the National Tile Museum) in Lisbon, Portugal. This adoration of the shepherds was painted in 1580 by Marçal de Matos and is from an altarpiece from the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Vida from the demolished St Andrew’s Church in Lisbon
Leaving flocks behind,
amid ox and ass shut up,
shepherds found their lamb
