Good morning,
After the shepherds returned to their flocks, the very next verse in Luke says this:
21 After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
We rarely reflect on the circumcision of Jesus, even though this sign of the covenant has a significant place in both Old and New Testaments. But there are occasional representations in art, including this section of an altarpiece, the Twelve Apostles Altar in St James’ Church, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Franconia, Germany.
A Jew, eight days old,
God’s covenant marked in flesh,
his love made human
