Sunday Worship Update

Friday 23 October 2026

Good morning,

Just after yesterday’s Chaplaincy newsletter was sent out, we learned that this Sunday’s preacher, Professor Scott Spurlock of Glasgow University, has had to postpone his visit to St Salvator’s Chapel.  We wish him well and look forward to a rearranged visit before too long.

In his place I will preach this coming Sunday 25 October on the readings he had chosen, and keeping his title The Grace of God’s Law.  (It won’t be the first time I’ve made a deadline by the skin of my teeth – a phrase we owe to Job 19:20.)  Revd Sam Ferguson, Assistant Chaplain will lead us in prayer and in the Eucharist for those who stay.  St Salvator’s Chapel Choir will have returned from Independent Learning Week and will sing from Psalm 90, music by Sir George Dyson (1883-1964) and a former organ scholar Michael Chamberlain (b. 2003), whose website is here: https://mikechamberlain.co.uk/ .  We’ll hear organ music by Bach following the benediction.  The service will be livestreamed here: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/chaplaincy/worship/

Both the readings, from Leviticus and Matthew reflect on love – the love found in God and which his followers are invited to share with God and neighbour.  And so the image on the cover of the order of service is, literally, of love, which I snapped in New York on a visit there some years ago.

If you are travelling back to St Andrews over coming days, safe journey, and all are welcome at St Salvator’s Chapel this Sunday at 11 am for reflections on law, grace and love.

Yours,

Donald
